Timeline of Major Movies Using MoCap.

Total Recall [1]
Total Recall (1990)
The film won a "Special Achievement Award" for its Visual Effects by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences.
The revolutionary use of motion capture was accomplished for the skeletal CGI characters (moving behind an X-ray screen) in the subway shootout scene.
Lord of the Rings Series (2001-2013) - Golum (Smeagle)
Avatar (2010) (Navi people)
Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011)- the monkeys
Pacific Rim (2013) - the robotic suits

Development/History Milestones [1]
  Technical Mathematic concepts

  • 1960s Disney Imagineering uses mechanical “motion programming” for audio animatronics
  • 1960s Bill Polhemus at Harvard University, magnetic tracker
  • 1962 First human motion to drive a digital character, :ee Harrisons Animac

Outline for CaseStudy: Motion Capture

Topic: Motion Capture  (Mocap)

Research Outline

Main argument: Motion Capture is as necessary to animate as animators.
A lot of animation uses exaggerations in movement to communicate more clearly which may not come from motion capture, but a lot of live action realistic visual effects can conveniently get much needed realistic movement from motion capture technology.

  • What are the general types of products or fields of study that use Motion capture

  • Major companies involved in motion capture

  • specific movies, games, or other products known for motion capture, and what role or purpose it had. (supporting evidence)

  • Summary on how motion capture works, with diagrams and other visual aids.

  • The outdated and earliest forms of motion capture and how it evolved to the present day most cutting edge innovations.

  • Methodologies

  • equipment  price/performance levels and types.

  • motion capture job/integration with visual effects companies. (support evidence)

  • Specialties with in Motion Capture.

Conclusion/ closing.

  • Currently used motion capture that was pretty successful.

  • Key ideas about motion capture's impact on the market and society.

  • Is motion capture an effective innovation. is it break-through or progressive.

  • It captures real movemnts that is useful in more than just entertainment media.

    • Motion Capture is more effective and flexible than previous techniques that are trying to achieve the same goals. realistic motion etc.

    Week1_Motion Capture Topic

    Motion Capture
is a bit expensive but effective fusion of live action and CG animation.
It also has evolved in the gaming industry and interactive media.

    Vicon_established_company

A 25 yr old motion capture company probably could tell me a few things about the evolution of motion capture, which I will take a look at.

    This is Vicon's website above.

From their case studies I realize that they have interest in medical purposes for their motion capture technology as well. One of their studies involves using the technology to improve surgical procedure for a cerebral palsy patient. This page opens up to all sorts of cases under educational, engineering, life sciences, and of course entertainment.

    Blade
    Cara
    Tracker
